Stroke Rehab Center in Mumbai

Stroke Rehab Center: Urgent Requirement in Mumbai

Stroke is the second most cause of death in India and around the world. There have been more than 1.4 million cases of stroke in a year among which around 100,000 to 110,000 case are from Mumbai. Death due to stroke is higher because of both, the changing population exposure to risk factor and not able to afford the high cost of stroke care. Majority of stroke survivors continue to live with disabilities and costs of on-going rehabilitation and long term care are largely undertaken by family members, which impoverish their families.

The major reason for increase in mortality rate post stroke is due to delay in reaching medical care and lack of awareness and financial assistance.

In this fast moving city, people spend more time working due to which there is increase in hypertension cases, the first major risk factor for stroke. Hypertension accounts for 54% of stroke cases, 22.8% stroke cases due to alcoholism and smoking.

"According to the studies there is an increase in early age stroke; Mean age for stroke in Mumbai was < 60 years, 3.8% cases comprises of <45 years of age."

Males are affected more than females. 149/10000 person year stroke cases of men compared to 141/10,000 person year stroke cases of woman. If age standard is considered the stroke cases of men per 10,000 are 162 whereas woman per 10,000 is 141. This ratio states that men are at higher risk than woman.

Looking at the strategic number it is clear that in future there will be more number of stroke cases than the number of stroke unit.

At present Mumbai has only few stroke unit but to beat stroke and improve patient’s quality of live we need more specialized stroke units. For better quality of life people need to be aware of their health and take proper steps for the same. Stroke is not a curse but the result of our poor health.

ReLiva Physiotherapy & Rehab has set up a facility for in-patient stroke rehab to address this urgent need for the hour.

Neuro Rehabilitation: How it helps in recovery of patient

Treatment and Recovery after Stroke

Neurological conditions affect all ages and people. We come across many such people and think that they will hardly be able to restore their normal functions anymore.

Neurological conditions would include:

  • stroke
  • multiple sclerosis
  • brain or spinal cord injury,
  • Parkinson's disease

These may affect mobility, balance, strength, flexibility, thinking, coordination. Further they can cause dizziness, unsteadiness, muscle  weakness and paralysis in some cases.

These problems often interfere with the patient’s daily activities, such as self-care, work, school and even getting around the house and neighbourhood. This decrease in physical function can cause additional problems, including fatigue, deconditioning, falls and reduced heart and lung function capacity. All of these inevitably lead to social isolation and therefore a poor quality of life.Stroke Recovery Process

Physiotherapy based neurological rehabilitation at this juncture comes to the rescue- for both the caregiver as well as the patient. Neuro Rehab is an active participatory process involving a dynamic interaction between the person with neurological deficits and the health professional members of the team.

To begin with, your physiotherapist will assess your specific limitations and work with you to develop treatment goals and a plan to achieve them. Targeted therapeutic exercises can improve your balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, mood and cardiovascular function. Improving your function can reduce pain and other physical limitations, allowing you to manage daily tasks better and participate in activities that matter to you.

Physiotherapy may include treatment techniques which relax muscles when tight and stimulate muscles when weak. The physiotherapist through his/her handling of specific bodily parts influences the muscles and guides the patient to perform a particular movement. In this time the patient may learn to execute movements with better control and less assistance. The ultimate aim of rehabilitation is for the patient to experience near normal life as early as possible. The rehabilitation does not stop at discharge from the hospital but also continues after the patient has returned to his/her home.

We provide Physiotherapy services in:

Stroke Treatment and Life after Rehabilitation

There is life even after Stroke

Updated on 28 Sep, 2018

Just Experienced Stroke?

If you just experienced a stroke, you are most likely scared and confused. Some of the questions you have may include: “Why did I have a stroke?”; “What kind of stroke treatment is available?”; and “What kind of rehabilitation do I need?”.

Your experiences will vary depending on where in your brain the stroke occurred and the type of stroke. Learn more about stroke, risks, types of treatment and rehabilitation, and recovery for your specific post-stroke challenges.

What is Stroke?

Also referred as “ Brain Attacks” or CVA (Cerebro Vascular Accident); Stroke is loss of brain function due to a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain.

This disturbance is caused by either Ischemia (lack of blood flow) or Haemorrhage ( rupture of blood vessels). Ischemia can be caused because of thrombosis (blood clot) blocking the flow of blood to brain and accounts to 80% of stroke cases.

Stroke and Ischemic heart disease together form the most lethal disease in India, causing long lasting brain damage and debilitating disabilities among those who survive

Why did I have a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. There are many factors that may contribute to having a stroke.

Risk Factors that can cause Stroke

Stroke is preventable with manageable risk factors such as

  • Hypertension,
  • Diabetes,
  • Cigarette Smoking,
  • High Alcohol Consumption,
  • Sedentary lifestyle,
  • Obesity and
  • high cholesterol.

But there are certain non-modifiable risk factors such as Aging, Gender (males more affected than females) and Cardiac disease.

The cause of some strokes is never known. The good news is that strokes can be treated and prevented.

How do I know? Signs & Symptoms of Stroke

Symptoms usually appear suddenly, over seconds to minutes and symptoms depending upon the area of the brain affected. Following are some of the main symptoms:

  • Hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body including face)
  • Numbness and Loss of sensations in the affected side of the body
  • Altered smell, taste, hearing or vision, difficulty in swallowing and speech
  • Balance problems, altered walking pattern and activity of daily living such as eating, dressing, mobility etc. get affected

What is the treatment for Stroke?

Immediate treatment can help minimize effects of stroke and improve recovery outcomes. Since stroke is a medical emergency, Rush the affected person to a medical facility.

  1. The first line of treatment is Thrombolysis ( breaking the clot down) or Thrombectomy (removal of the clot by surgery).
  2. After the hospital discharge, a sustained Rehabilitation is required to resume lost body functions.

Stroke affects everybody differently. Many stroke survivors continue to improve over a long time, sometimes over a number of years.  Recovery from stroke involves making changes in the physical, social and, emotional aspects of your life.

Rehabilitation is about getting back to normal life and living as independent a life as possible. It involves taking an active approach to ensure that your life goes on. This can mean learning new skills or relearning old ones. It may involve adapting to new limitations and post-stroke conditions. Or it can mean finding new social, emotional, and practical support to live your best life post-stroke.Stroke Recovery Process

With good care and rehabilitation, there is life after stroke.

Stroke Rehabilitation Programme

It is a process to help the stroke affected people to return back to normal life as much as possible by regaining & relearning the skills of everyday living. Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy - together form the cornerstones of the Rehabilitation process for such people.

How can Physiotherapy help in Stroke Rehabilitation?

  • Physiotherapist focuses on educating the patient and family members about the condition, improving the joint range and strength by performing exercises & relearning functional tasks such as bed mobility, transfers, walking etc.
  • Physiotherapist also works with patient to improve awareness and use of hemiplegic side with use of various neurological methods such as NDT/BOBATH.
  • Advanced Physiotherapy setups like those of ReLiva also offer novel non-invasive rehabilitation methods like Mirror therapy/ Motor Imagery etc.
  • Stroke also reduces general fitness thus a Cardiorespiratory Training under the supervision of a trained physiotherapist can improve the walking speed, tolerance & independence during walking.

Stroke Rehabilitation should be started as quickly as possible and can last anywhere from few months to over a year. Early recovery and rehabilitation can improve functions and sometimes result into remarkable recoveries for someone who suffered a stroke. Maximum return of function can be achieved/seen in the very first few months after the stroke incidence, so it is advisable - “Sooner the Better
