Running Injury Prevention: 4 Tips for Half Marathon Runners
Preparing for a half marathon takes more than increasing your running distance. Consistent training, recovery and responding early to pain can help you prepare more effectively.
- Increase your running load gradually. Avoid sudden increases in distance, speed or training intensity. Allow your body time to adapt.
- Warm up before running. Begin with easy movement and gradually build up to your planned pace.
- Make recovery part of your training. Get adequate sleep, allow recovery between demanding sessions, and include appropriate strength training.
- Do not ignore persistent pain. Pain that changes your running pattern, keeps returning or worsens with activity deserves attention. Continuing to train through it may aggravate the problem.
There is no single training plan that suits every runner. Adjust your training to your experience, current fitness and symptoms.

When Should a Runner See a Physiotherapist?
Consider a physiotherapy assessment if you experience:
- Pain that persists, returns repeatedly or worsens as you run.
- Knee, calf, heel or foot pain that limits your training.
- Reduced strength, movement or confidence after an injury.
- Difficulty returning to running after a period of rest or rehabilitation.
A physiotherapist can assess your symptoms, movement, strength and functional limitations to help determine the next steps. Depending on the findings, your plan may include activity modification, mobility work, strengthening and a gradual return to running.
Do not push through severe or sudden pain. Seek prompt medical assessment if you cannot bear weight, have substantial swelling or suspect a serious injury. Sudden calf swelling with warmth or redness, especially with chest pain or breathlessness, requires urgent medical attention.
