More than one third of senior citizen, elderly of age 65 years or older fall each year and in half of such cases the falls are recurrent. This makes elderly fall prevention a very important aspect of the elderly care at home. - Floors – Keep the pathway clear so you don’t trip over them. Use double-sided tape or a non-slip backing so rugs don’t slip.
- Stairs and Steps – Make sure the carpet is firmly attached on stairs and fix loose or uneven steps. Install handrails on both the sides of stairs.
- Kitchen and Laundry- Keep daily items within easy reach. Never use chair as a step tool, even if you use it ensure that it has a bar to hold on to.
- Bedrooms – Place a lamp close to the bed where it’s easy to reach. Install a night light so that you can don’t stumble upon any objects.
- Bathrooms – Put a non-slip rubber mat on the floor of bathroom. Install sturdy grab bars for the tub or shower, next to the toilet.
- Other Safety tips – Avoid walking barefoot or wearing slippers. Always wear shoes indoor and outdoor. Consider wearing an alarm device or whistle that will summon help in case you fall.
